True North Budgeting v1.4.1 – Plan on Your Schedule

5 min read

True North Budgeting v1.4.1 brings more flexibility to the way you plan. Alongside the familiar schedule options, custom recurring schedules can follow the timing of real paychecks, bills, and goals. The Dashboard puts income beside upcoming commitments, reusable templates help with irregular entries, and schedule notices point you toward items that need attention. Here is how the update fits together. Screenshots use fictional example data.

Set a Schedule That Matches Real Life

The built-in schedule options are still there for income, expenses, and goals. If a weekly, monthly, or other existing option already matches an item, you can keep using it as you do today. When the timing needs more flexibility, you can create a custom recurring schedule, such as every four weeks or every three months. The app places those items on their scheduled dates, so a four-week paycheck can move through the calendar as it does in real life.

For example, a bill due every three months should appear in the months when it is actually due. A goal contribution made every six weeks should follow that cadence in the plan. Those distinctions matter when you are checking whether a specific pay period can cover what is coming next. You can review your sources in Income, your recurring costs in Expenses, and contribution timing in Goals.

This example income source keeps its current four-week schedule until a planned change takes effect.

See Income Beside Commitments in Each Pay Period

The Dashboard shows scheduled income alongside expenses and goal contributions in the current and upcoming pay periods. When a paycheck lands, you can mark it Received. The progress display separates received income from scheduled income and paid or deducted commitments from those still ahead.

Both bars share a dollar scale, making the gap between scheduled income and planned expenses and goals visible. Plain space shows when income is higher; diagonal stripes mark a scheduled shortfall when commitments are higher. That shortfall is a planning signal, not a bank balance or a prediction that an account will overdraw. It gives you a reason to inspect the dates and amounts before the period arrives.

Current and next pay periods show received income alongside expenses and goals, including a planned shortfall if applicable.

Keep Reusable Entries Ready Without Counting Them Early

You can duplicate income or expenses and save templates for entries you expect to reuse. If an irregular payment or cost returns with similar details, start from the template and adjust it for the new occurrence. A template stays out of your budget until you use it, so keeping one on hand does not silently add an expected paycheck or bill.

This is useful for entries that are familiar but do not belong on an automatic schedule: occasional freelance income, a seasonal service, or a repeat purchase with a changing date or amount. You still decide when the entry belongs in the plan.

One-time Birthday Budget and Babysitting templates stay ready to use without creating a budget entry.

Review Schedules That Need Attention

The notification center surfaces saved schedules that need review, such as one whose schedule details are missing or cannot be used. A valid schedule set to start in the future does not create a premature review alert.

When review is needed, a notice can open the affected income, expense, or goal. If the schedule needs further repair, the notice offers help.

This example has no schedules needing review, so the notification center reports “all caught up.”

Update and Keep Planning Locally

True North Budgeting remains a privacy-focused, transactionless budgeting app. You choose the schedule, mark income received, and decide when to use a template. Your budget data stays on your device; these views do not require a bank connection or cloud sync. If you are on an earlier version, use the app's update notice or visit the download page for the current release.

Thank you to our True North Budgeting customers who continue to share feedback. Your experiences and suggestions help drive the updates and new features we bring to the app.
